This information comes from the North Carolina Penitentiary Descriptive Register of Convicts,1869-1884, on file in the Prison Records Group at the North Carolina State Archives in Raleigh. Sometimes this was indicated in the Descriptive Register, while other times their names appears on “receipts,” in newspaper reports, in government documents, or on census records.
